Author Archives: forwhattheygave.com

My site was placed on WordPress in 2013. Since then I have added a significant amount of material. Approximately 9 months ago my yearly bill was due. I was suddenly unable to access Forwhattheygave.com. A Wordpress Tech contacted me offering assistance. He simply tried to copy my material and assumed control of Forwhattheygave.com. My site still exists as the Tech recently copied material and created ForWhatTheyGaveOnSaturdayAfternoon.com which was my web site prior to setting umps site on Wordpresss. You can find the site as couple of Months ago a WordPress Tech found the site. Thank You. Phil

Omar Bradley is probably the 2d from the left.

The Gym for the Game — was beating Navy important to Cadets? There were few radios at the Academy.

1914 Football Season

Mike Belter – I finally finished that book on the 1914 Army Football Team, and published it as an e-Book.

It is available in multiple formats on Smashwords for free, and also available at a number of online bookstores, though they might charge you.

Because some folks either do not like or have access to e-Books, a paperback is available on CreateSpace and Amazon for about $23.  All profits from any sales will be divided between AOG and WP.org.     https://www.createspace.com/6412604

The importance of beating Navy streaches back well before the 1914 Season

The Team was Coached by Lt Charles Daly Class of 1905. Its Captain was Vernon Prichard Class of 1915

Members of the Class of 1915 included Louis Merillat, James Van Fleet, Omar Bradley, Paul Hodgson Charles Benedict, Hubert Harmon and Leland Hobbs

Dwight Eisenhower  sustained an injury. As a result he only earned an Army A his Yearling year — 1912. He assisted as a coach for the Cullum Hall team.

The score was Army 20 – Navy 0

The Plebe Team was referred to as the Cullum Hall Squad.

WEST POINT, N.Y., Nov. 29. — The victorious Army football team reached home at 4 o’clock this afternoon and received a rousing welcome. The scenes which annually feature the homecoming of the football men, whether they are winners or losers, were enacted, although, if possible, with a little more enthusiasm than in the past.
The football men brought with them from Philadelphia the blue and gold blanket which has adorned the back: of the Navy;s mascot goat for many years…

Omar Bradley

The Soldiers General

Jim Ellis – Star Man; Class of 1962 Brigade Commander, who was to ultimately wear 3 Stars asked General Bradley what his reaction was to women joining the Corps of Cadets.

General Bradley said “Congress passed it, the President signed it, I support it”.

Editor’s note — Does America make soldiers like that anymore? Maybe this web site dedicated to the Corps and for the Corps of Cadets will tell you.

“’tis not what man does which exalts him, but what
man would do!” It was Sandy’s good fortune to be pro-
vided with the means and the background necessary to
know and appreciate the many arts. His interest in the
theatre, a devotion to books and music, and a love for
painting make him an excellent conversationalist. Could
it be these artistic inclinations that have so often
prompted, “Is she pro?” Proof enough isn’t it, that
Sandy was one of us?
